How fast can you actually get to me?
Inside the Huntsville city limits we average around 30 minutes door to door. Madison, Monrovia and Moores Mill run similar. Harvest, Meridianville and Owens Cross Roads are typically 30–45. Hazel Green, New Market, Toney, Athens, Decatur, Hartselle and Priceville run 40–55, and Ardmore is 50–60. Dispatch gives you the real number for your address when you call.
Are you really open at 3am, on weekends and on holidays?
Yes. There is no answering service and no voicemail queue. A person picks up and a licensed technician is dispatched from that conversation, at any hour, on any day of the year.
What information should I have ready when I call?
Your location as precisely as you can give it, what is locked (house, car, business, padlock), and what happened. For vehicles, the year, make and model. For rural addresses, a cross street or landmark — mapping data out in the county is frequently wrong.
What do you need from me before you open a lock?
Proof you are entitled to be there — photo ID matching the address, a lease, a utility bill, or a vehicle registration. Every legitimate locksmith runs this check. It is the only thing standing between your property and someone else making the same call about it.
My child or pet is locked in the car. What do I do?
Call 911 first, then call us. Tell dispatch it is a child or an animal in the vehicle and we escalate immediately — but emergency services will always reach you faster than any locksmith can.
Price and payment
How much will it cost?
You get the total for your job, at that hour, on the phone before anyone gets in a truck. We do not publish a price list because a real number depends on your specific hardware, the time of day and how far out you are — and a table that ignores those is how people end up quoted one figure and charged another. If a technician finds something genuinely unexpected, the work stops and you get re-quoted rather than surprised at the end.
Do you charge more at night and on weekends?
Yes, there is an after-hours rate, and you hear it on the phone. Anyone claiming emergency work costs the same at 3am as at 3pm is recovering it somewhere you cannot see.
Why do some locksmiths quote $19 and then charge hundreds?
Because the $19 is a service call fee, not the price of the work, and the business model depends on you not realizing that until a technician is already on your driveway. The defense is simple: ask for the total price for the whole job before you agree to anything. If they will not give one, hang up.
Do you give free estimates?
Yes — free and with no obligation, over the phone or through our estimate form. For planned work like rekeys, hardware upgrades or commercial systems, we will quote in writing.
How the work is done
Will you damage my door or lock?
Almost never. Non-destructive entry — picking, bypass, decoding — is always attempted first, and it works on the large majority of residential, commercial and automotive locks. If a lock genuinely cannot be picked in reasonable time we tell you before we drill, and we quote the replacement cylinder first.
Are your locksmiths licensed and insured?
Yes. Every technician who attends a job is licensed, bonded and insured, and carries identification you are welcome to ask for at the door.
Can you work on high-security locks?
Yes — installation, repair, replacement and restricted keyway systems. We will also tell you honestly when a high-security cylinder is not the upgrade you actually need, which is more often than you might expect.
Do you cover both homes and businesses?
Both, plus vehicles. Residential, commercial and automotive all run from the same 24-hour dispatch — you do not have to categorise your own problem before you call.
Keys, rekeys and locks
What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?
Rekeying changes the pins inside the cylinder you already own so old keys stop working. Replacing throws that hardware away and fits new. Rekeying is dramatically cheaper, takes minutes per lock, and delivers the same security outcome — unless the lock itself is worn out or genuinely too weak for the door.
I just bought a house. What should I do?
Rekey every exterior lock in your first week. There is no way to know how many keys to a resale home are in circulation — previous owners, family, contractors, cleaners, realtors, lockboxes. It costs less than one new deadbolt and takes under an hour.
Why does my key work sometimes and not others?
Usually the key is worn, not the lock. Years of use shorten the cut peaks until the key stops setting the pins accurately, and cold weather removes what tolerance is left. The tell: a less-used spare still works fine. The fix is a fresh key cut to the lock’s code, not a copy of the worn one.
Can a hardware store copy my car key?
They can cut the metal blade, which will open the door. They cannot program the transponder chip, so the engine will not start. That step needs a locksmith or a dealer — we do it at the roadside.
Can all my doors be put on one key?
Usually yes, if the cylinders share a compatible keyway. Where one is an outlier, swapping just that cylinder is normally cheap enough to be worth it. It is free to ask for while we are already on site.
