A locked door is a line item
For a house, a lock problem is stressful. For a business, it is measurable. A storefront that cannot open at seven has lost the morning. A warehouse door that will not secure means someone stays on site. A suite that cannot be locked at close means an insurance conversation.
We work commercial calls with that clock in mind, which mostly means carrying the parts. Mortise cylinders, common exit device trim, closer arms, strike plates and cores live in the truck, so the usual answer is “fixed today” rather than “ordered Tuesday.”
Master key systems, designed before they are cut
A master system sounds simple: one key opens everything, individual keys open one thing. Making that true across twenty doors without accidentally creating a key that opens something it should not is a charting exercise, not a pinning exercise.
Done properly, you get:
- A grand master — yours, opens everything.
- Sub-masters — a manager opens their department, not the others.
- Change keys — an individual opens exactly one door.
Done improperly, you get “phantom keys” — unintended pin combinations that quietly open doors nobody authorized, and which nobody discovers until someone tries a key in the wrong lock and it turns.
We chart the whole hierarchy before cutting anything, and we give you the chart. It is your system; you should own the documentation for it.
Interchangeable cores: the answer to staff turnover
If your keys change hands often, the standard approach — call a locksmith, pay a visit fee, rekey the cylinders — gets expensive fast.
Interchangeable core cylinders let you pull the core with a control key and drop in a fresh one in seconds. You keep spare cores on a shelf. A staff change becomes a ten-second job you do yourself. It costs more to set up once and it stops costing you from the second turnover onward.
Exit devices, closers and the life-safety side
Panic hardware is the one category where “we’ll get to it next week” is not an acceptable answer.
An exit device that latches and does not release is a fire-code violation and a genuine danger. If a bar in your building sticks, binds, or needs a shove, call us and say so — it goes to the front of the queue no matter what time it is.
Most exit device faults are not the device. They are alignment: the door has sagged, the frame has moved, the strike is a few millimeters out, and the latch is now binding under load. Adjustment fixes it far more often than replacement, and it is a fraction of the cost.
Door closers are the other constant. Every commercial glass door in Huntsville either slams hard enough to rattle the frame or drifts and never latches at all. Both are adjustable — sweep speed, latch speed, backcheck — and both destroy the door slowly if left alone.

The narrow-stile aluminum-and-glass doors on nearly every retail and office unit along University Drive, Memorial Parkway and through Research Park have their own failure pattern: worn pivots, sagging bottom rails, and mortise cylinders that seize in the humidity. After a break-in or an attempted one
Same principle as residential, larger stakes. We secure the opening the same night, replace what was destroyed, and put a written scope and quote in your hands for the insurer.
